<죽은 영혼(Dead souls)>은 니콜라이 고골(Nikolay Gogol)의 1842년 장편소설이다.
이 작품은 <검찰관>과 마찬가지로 푸슈킨으로부터 테마를 얻은 것이다.
집필 착수는 1835년으로 고골 일생의 대작이다.
속편도 썼으나 미완성인 채 작자 자신이 불살라 버려
현재는 제1부밖에 남지 않았기 때문에 보통 <죽은 영혼>이라고 하면 제1부를 말한다.
이 소설은 사기꾼 치치코프가 한밑천 벌려고 어떤 시골거리에 나타나
인근의 지주한테서 죽은 농노를 사 모으며 다니는 것이 줄거리이다.
이 작품의 진가는 줄거리에 있는 것이 아니고,
치치코프가 방문하는 지주나 시골관리 하나하나의 묘사에 있다.
백일몽을 꾸고 있는 허수아비 같은 마니로프, 우둔하면서도 욕심꾸러기 여지주 코로보치카,
굉장한 수전노 프류시킨, 대식한인 소바케비치, 허풍쟁이 노즈도료프 등이 바로 그들이다.
추악한 얼굴만을 모은 화랑(畵廊)-이것이 이 소설의 전부이나
작가 특유의 디테일한 묘사에 의해 각 인물이 훌륭히 그려져 있어
러시아 리얼리즘 문학의 확립에 있어 기념할 만한 작품이 되었다.

니콜라이 고골(Nikolay Gogol)의 시 “죽은 영혼(Dead Souls)”에 대한 샤갈의 삽화 시리즈는
작가의 작업과 유명한 시의 삽화 모두에서 특별한 장이다.
샤갈은 1923년 유명한 출판사이자 상인인 볼라드(Ambroise Vollard)의 의뢰로
"죽은 영혼"의 삽화 작업을 시작했다.
1926년 초에 에칭, 드라이 포인트 및 아쿠아 틴트 기법의 삽화 96장이 완성되었다.

샤갈은 예술에서 길고 풍요롭고 행복한 삶을 살았다.
그는 명확한 스타일이나 예술적 운동에 맞지 않고 국립학교에 속하지 않고
자신만의 시적 스타일을 만드는 뛰어난 예술가들에 속한다.
샤갈은 회화, 드로잉, 스테인드 글라스, 조각, 태피스트리 등 다양한 예술 분야에서 일했다.
그의 활동에서 매우 특별하고 중요한 부분은 책 삽화였다.

거의 60년 동안 샤갈은 문학 작품 My Life (1922-1923),
니콜라이 고골의 죽은 영혼(Dead Souls, 1927), Fables of La Fontaine (1930),
The Bible (1931-1939, 1952-1956) 등을 보여주는 일련의 판화를 만들었다.
이 책들은 모두 소위 livres dʻart 또는 livres de peintre라는 한정판으로 발행되었다.
이 책은 스티치가 아닌 좋은 종이에 인쇄되어
원본 지문으로 장식되어 있으며 작가의 사인이 찍혀 있다.

니콜라이 고골의 '죽은 영혼'은 이러한 뛰어난 책 중 하나이다.
시의 삽화는 유명한 파리 출판사이자 미술 수집가인
앙부아즈 볼라드(Ambroise Vollard)가 샤갈에게 의뢰했다.
베를린에 있는 샤갈은 1922년 파리에 있는 오랜 친구인
시인 블레이즈 센드라르(Blaise Cendrars)로부터 편지를 받았는데,
센드라르는 파리의 유명 출판사인 볼라드 (Vollard)가 훌륭한 책을 출판하기 위해
일련의 삽화를 의뢰하기를 원했고 이 커미션을 위해 샤갈이 파리에 와야 한다고 편지에 썼다.
1923년 9월 샤갈은 프랑스 수도에 도착했다.

첫 만남에서 볼라드는 샤갈에게 다른 내용의 이야기에 삽화를 만들 것을 제안했지만
샤갈은 고골의 죽은 영혼(Dead Souls)으로 할 것을 주장했다.
샤갈은 항상 고골을 존경했고, 1917년에 고골에 대한 오마주 작품을 제작했으며,
1920년대 초 모스크바에 있는 국립 유대인 극장 감독관을 위한 무대 세트와 의상을 제작했다.
죽은 영혼(Dead Souls)의 삽화는 샤갈이 에칭에서 구상하고 실행했다.

그는 순수한 에칭 또는 드라이 포인트도 사용했으며
이 두 가지 방법을 에칭과 아쿠아틴트와 결합할 수 있었다.
다양하고 놀라운 구성 구조를 적용하는 창의적인 기술 덕분에
샤갈은 매우 광범위한 비유적 수단을 얻었으며 놀라운 예술적 결과를 낳았다.

그는 격렬하게 작업을 했다.
1924년 말까지 약 60 개의 에칭이 생산되었고 1926년 1월에 샤갈은
100장의 인쇄가 이루어 졌다고 보고하여 그의 작업의 일부가 완성되었다.

볼라드와 샤갈 자신이 자유롭게 처분할 수 있도록 소량의 인쇄물이 남아 있었기 때문에
전시회에 출품 될 수 있었으며 에디션의 주요 부분은 책 출판을 위해 기탁되었다.
그러나 어떤 이유로 볼라드는 그것을 진행하기 위해 서두르지 않았다.
그는 많은 프로젝트에서 이런 식으로 행동했다.

프랑스 최고의 인쇄소인 Imptimerie National에서 '죽은 영혼'를
인쇄하려는 의도에도 불구하고 볼라드는 1930년대 내내
자신의 계획 실행을 계속 지연시켰으므로 결국 실행되지 않았다.
그러던 중 볼라드는 1939년 7월 교통 사고로 사망했다.
제 2차 세계 대전이 발발했고, 실제로 판화가 제작된 지 20 년이 지난
1947년에 프랑스의 신세대 테리아돔(Eugene Teriadom) 출판사가
샤갈의 딸 아이다(Ida Chagall)과 함께 출판에 참여했다.
이 책은 1948년 가을에 출판되었다.

프랑스어로 번역되었으며 샤갈의 삽화와 함께

같은 1948년에 샤갈과 출판사의 작품은 국제적인 인정을 받았으며
베니스 비엔날레에서 그랑프리를 수상했다.

유명한 시의 삽화에서 샤갈은 다른 예술가와 달리

시리즈에서 그는 문학 서사의 거의 모든 주요 에피소드와
작가가 간략하게 언급한 에피소드를 재현했다.
모든 세부 사항이 포함된 문학 걸작의 “편지”에 가깝고,
고골의 유머와 아이러니에 대한 섬세한 이해와 작가 자신의
플라스틱 언어 덕분에 샤갈은 문학적 텍스트와 동등한 시각적 효과를 만들 수 있었다.

오늘날 “죽은 영혼”에 대한 완전한 일련의 에칭은 박물관과 개인 소장품으로는 드물다.
구 소련의 공간에는 단 4개의 박물관 컬렉션에서만 볼 수 있다.
1927년 샤갈이 직접 기부한 모스크바의 트레티야코프 미술관,
상트 페테르부르크의 에르미타주 미술관, 1981년에는 모스크바의 푸쉬킨 미술관,
비쳅스크(Vitebsk))의 마르크 샤갈 미술관이 그 자신을 맡았다.
일련의 96 에칭은 샤갈의 손녀 Meret과 Bella Meyer에 의해
1999년 Vitebsk의 Marc Chagall Museum에 기증되었다.
