샤갈의 캔버스에서는 사랑하는 연인이 하늘을 날고,
중력을 거스르는 듯 둥둥 떠오르는 신랑신부를 위해 염소가 바이올린을 연주한다.
꿈과도 같은 이미지, 상상한 듯 묘사된 환상의 장면.
우리가 샤갈을 기억할 때 자연스레 떠오르는 것들이다.

러시아의 유대인 지역인 비텝스크에서 태어나 평범한 유년기를 보낸 샤갈이
1920년 23세 때 파리로 이주하였을 당시, 프랑스 화가들은
객관적이고 합리적인 사고를 바탕으로 한 작품을 추구하였다.
그러나 샤갈은 떠나온 고향에 대한 향수와 그리움, 그의 평생의 연인인 벨라와의 사랑,
심지어 전설과 신화 속 소재까지도 작품으로 표현하여

전혀 예상할 수 없었던 영역으로 예술을 확장 시켰다.

‘성서’와 ‘서커스’
1985년 97세의 나이로 사망한 샤갈은 그의 긴 인생만큼

다양한 주제의 수많은 작품들을 남겼다.
그 중 ‘성서’와 ‘서커스’에 대한 두 가지 주제는 샤갈의 작품의 주축을 이루고 있다.

‘성서’에 대한 그의 관심은 유태인이라는 태생적 이유와 당시 유명했던
화상(畵商) 앙브루아즈 볼라르(Ambroise Vollard)의 영향이 크게 작용했다.
출판사를 운영하던 볼라르는 라퐁텐의 <우화집>, 고골리의 <죽은 영혼>에 이어 <성서>의 삽화를

샤갈에게 의뢰 했는데, 샤갈은 직접 팔레스타인 등지를 여행하며 작품을 위한 구상을 했다고 한다.
훗날 볼라르는 자신의 자서전에서 “작업량이 많았지만 화가는 지치지 않고 열과 성을 다해 작업했다”
라고 샤갈을 회상했다.

2차 세계대전 당시 나치의 탄압을 피하기 위한 미국으로의 이주와
아내 벨라의 갑작스러운 죽음 등을 겪으며 힘든 시절을 보낸 샤갈은
1950년 남프랑스 지중해 연안에 자리를 잡으면서 그의 인생의 중요한 작품인
성서 연작을 그리겠다는 계획을 구체화 한다.

이미 오래 전부터 샤갈의 작품 세계에 자리 잡고 있던 주제인 만큼 이번에는 작품들이
서로 상호 작용을 일으키며 전체로서 감상될 수 있도록 신성한 ‘명상의 장소’를 만들고자 했다.
그러나 예상치 못한 어려움으로 샤갈의 ‘명상의 장소’는 지어지지 못하다가
1973년, 샤갈의 86살 생일에 니스시가 기증한 토지에 지어진
샤갈 성서 메시지 미술관이 마침내 개관되게 된다.

<성서 메시지>로 통괄되는 작품 중 가장 중심이 되는 작품이 바로 <다윗왕>과
<율법판을 받는 모세>, <십계판을 부수는 모세>, 그리고 <홍해를 건넘>이다.
샤갈의 종교화는 종교적인 장면의 직접적인 묘사에 치중하기 보다는
종교화에서 발견되는 인물들을 닮은 공통적인 인간의 비극을
그만의 독특한 조형화된 시적인 이미지로 구성하였다는 특징이 있다.

서커스에 대한 샤갈의 관심은 그가 유년시절에 보았던 집시의 광경과

성인이 되어서 관람한 서커스 공연, 그리고 미술가들에 의해 만들어진

연극들에서 받은 인상들에서 생겨난 것이다.
특히 이번에도 역시 화상 볼라르의 영향이 크게 작용했는데,
볼라르는 <성서>의 삽화에 이어 서커스 풍경들의 그림들을 그려보라고 샤갈에게 조언했다고 한다.

<대형 서커스>는 샤갈의 서커스 그림 중 가장 뛰어나다고 평가받는 작품으로
흰색과 검은색의 율동적인 패턴의 곡선들은 신비롭고도 엄숙한 분위기를 자아낸다.

샤갈은 회화 뿐 아니라 판화, 벽화, 도자기, 조각, 스테인드글라스, 실내장식,
연극무대와 의상의 디자인 등 다양한 미술 분야에서 폭 넓게 활동했다.
한간에선 샤갈이 너무 다양한 분야에서 활동한 것을 두고 각 분야별 예술적 깊이는 얕다고
평가하기도 하지만 신비롭고 환상적인 분위기의 샤갈의 회화 작품이 그대로 투영된
아름다운 성당이나 오페라 하우스에 들어서게 된다면 생각이 달라질 것이다.

샤갈이 러시아에서 프랑스로 건너와 본격적으로 예술활동을 시작할 무렵의
파리 화단은 그림에서 주제를 없애고 대상의 형태 연구와 색채를 실험하는,
즉 야수파와 입체파가 대세이던 시절이었다.
그러나 샤갈은 주제가 뚜렷하게 보이는 전통적인 회화양식과
결별하고자 고군분투하던 파리 전위파 화가와는 반대로
사랑, 슬픔, 그리움, 공포 등 인간에게 친숙한 감정들을 그만의 독특한 화면에 담았다.

고향인 러시아의 민속적 뿌리와 유태인으로서의 고단한 삶,
타국에서 대부분을 보내며 느낀 고향에 대한 향수, 새로운 문화에 대한 동경과 동화,
사랑하는 여인과의 낭만적인 추억 등을 동화적인 구성과 강렬하고 눈부신 색채로 펼쳐낸 작품들.
샤갈은 수많은 현대미술 사조를 지켜보았지만 결국은 어떠한 유파에도 흡수되지 않고
시적인 호소력을 지닌 자신만의 화풍을 지켜냈다.

문화와 예술의 중심지로 이주한 동유럽 변방의 유태인 남성이
자신의 고향의 흔적은 간직한 채 새로운 미술을 흡수하고 변형하여 탄생시킨
독특하고 아름다운 예술이야말로 샤갈의 진정한 위업이 아닐까 싶다.

피카소와 함께 20세기 최고의 화가로 불리는 마르크 샤갈은
모더니즘 미술사에서 매우 독특한 위치를 차지한다.
그는 파리에서 활동한 프랑스 화가이지만, 자신의 출생지인 러시아의 문화를
결코 잊지 않았고, 유대인 가문의 전통 또한 늘 소중히 간직하였다.
뚜렷한 양식으로 구별되는 당대 화가들과는 달리, 그의 작품이 초현실주의와 표현주의,
신원시주의, 오르피즘 등 다양한 면모를 보이는 이유는 아마도
프랑스 국적을 가진 유대계 러시아 출생 화가라는 그의 복잡한 성장 배경 때문일 것이다.

‘색채의 마술사’라는 별칭을 얻을 정도로, 다양하고 풍부한 색채를
아름답고 환상적으로 그려낸 그는, 하늘을 나는 연인들, 바이올린 연주자와 광대,
에펠탑과 소박한 러시아 마을 풍경, 꽃과 정겨운 동물 등, 다양한 주제를 화폭에 담았지만,
그의 삶과 작품 활동에 있어서 가장 중요한 자리를 차지한 것 중의 하나는 성경이었다.

1931년 팔레스타인의 성지로 떠났던 여행에서 샤갈은,
“나는 그곳에서 성경과 내 자신의 일부를 발견하였다”라고 회상할 정도로,
자신의 삶이 뒤흔들리는 매우 강렬한 경험을 하였다.
이후로 그는 “나의 가장 위대한 시적 영감의 원천은 바로 성경이다”라는 고백처럼
유대인의 역사와 예언자들의 이야기를 담은 많은 작품을 제작하게 되었다.

이 작품은 ‘이집트 탈출’이라는 성경의 이야기를 주제로 한 ‘엑소더스’(L’Edoxus)이다.
화면의 오른쪽 아래에는 약속된 땅으로 백성을 이끄는 모세가
십계명 판을 들고 있는 자세로 표현되었고, 어린아이를 안은 여인,
희생제물을 바치려는 사람, 두 손을 올려들고 감사의 기도를 드리는 사람,
촛불을 든 사람 등의 다양한 모습이 그려졌다.

하지만 전통적인 ‘이집트 탈출’ 그림과 다른 점이 많다.
우선 그림의 주인공이 모세가 아니라는 점이다.
모세는 화면 구석에 작게 그려졌을 뿐이고,
큰 무리를 이루는 사람들의 모습이 화면 전체에 빼곡히 들어차 있다.
또한 화면 상단에 커다랗게 그려진,
십자가 처형을 당하는 예수님의 모습도 보는 이에게 놀라움을 주고 있다.

홍해 바다에 빠져 허우적대는 이집트 군인들의 모습은 보이지 않고,
대신 화면 왼쪽 윗부분에는 물에 빠져 떠내려오는 여인의 모습이 그려졌으며,
그 아래쪽으로는 불타는 집들과 눈길 위에 쓰러진 말이 있다.
한편 화면 오른쪽 윗부분에는 흰 드레스를 입은 여인 샤갈이 사랑하던
아내 벨라가 있고, 닭과 염소 등 샤갈이 즐겨 그리던 친근한 짐승들도 보인다.

이 작품은, 파라오와 이집트 군사들을 따돌리고 탈출에 성공했다는
긴장감 넘치는 기쁨을 표현하던 다른 그림들과는 달리,
매우 어두운 분위기가 화면 전체를 지배하고 있다는 점이 특징적인데,
얼굴에 미소를 머금은 사람들도 있지만,
아직도 한밤중인 듯 모두가 어둠에 싸여있다.
대체 샤갈은 무엇을 그리려 했던 것일까?

1차 세계대전에 이은 러시아의 공산혁명을 피해 프랑스로,
2차 세계대전 중 나치의 유대인 학살에서 살아남기 위해 다시 미국으로
피해 가야 했던 샤갈에게 ‘이집트 탈출’이라는 성경의 이야기는
이미 지나간 과거의 이야기 이상의 의미를 담고 있었다.

나치즘이 세력을 넓혀가면서 샤갈의 삶이 위태로워짐에 따라,
그의 작품은 점점 어두워지기 시작했으며 유대인 대량학살 사건을
암시하는 상징적인 형태들이 모습을 드러내었다.
그의 작품에서 불타는 집들은 전쟁을 의미하며, 물에 빠진 여인은 1947년
‘엑소더스’호를 타고 탈출하려던 유대인들을 다시 되돌려 보낸 추악한 사건을 암시한다.
두 번의 세계대전을 겪은 샤갈은 구약성경의 이야기를 빌어
전쟁의 참상과 평화의 추구라는 주제를 표현하고자 하였다.

그는 유대인이면서도 그리스도교적 모티프를 작품 속에 그려 넣었는데,
이는 러시아 출신 유대인으로서 유럽과 미국 각지를 떠돌아다니면서
작품세계를 넓혀간 그의 삶에 기인한다.
특히 프랑스에 정착하면서 알게 된 가톨릭 문인과 학자들의 영향이 크다.
유대교 사상과 엄격한 하시디즘, 러시아 민속과 프랑스 모더니즘,
그리고 그리스도교 사상이 조화를 이룬 그의 작품은, 과거의 역사를 다루면서도
동시에 현재의 상황을 이야기하고, 매우 개인적이면서도 또한
보편적인 메시지를 담은 독특한 모습으로 남게 되었다.

전쟁이 끝난지 20년이 지났으나 대전의 상처를 잊기에는

너무나 깊은 상처를 샤갈의 가슴에 남겼다.
< 순교자>,<망집>에 이은 걸작이 새로 탄생되었다.

여기서 작가는 나찌의 손으로 600만의 유태인이 학살된 것을 상기시키고 있으며,
실은 로마제국의 군대에 의해 이스라엘의 마지막 거점인 마사다의 성채가 함락되면서부터
망국의 민족이된 동포의 2000년간에 걸친 수난의 모든 것을 그리고 있다.

샤갈의 작품의 특징인 침략자는 한 사람도 그리지 않고,
거대한 암소로 희생을 상징화하여 끝이 잘게 째어진 묘선으로써
영원한 역사의 참극과 부조리를 화가가 고발하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다.
이러한 연유로 전쟁화가 위대한 예술로 승화될 수 있는 것이다

샤갈이 많이 제작했던 스테인드 글라스 풍의 작품이다.
화폭을 좌우로 양분하여 인생의 그늘과 양지를 표현하고 있다.
전쟁과 혁명으로 인해 상처받고 힘들었던 시간들과 자연과 사랑으로 인해
행복했던 기억들을 인생의 말년에 열정적으로 보여주고 있다.

야곱의 사다리는 히브리어로 술람 야코브(Sulam Yaakov, סולם יעקב)라 하는데,
하늘로 오르는 사다리로, 창세기에서 아브라함의 손자이자, 이삭의 작은 아들인 야곱이
형 에서로 부터 도망치는 도중 야곱의 꿈 속에서 나타난다.
이는 성경에 나오는 꿈에 관한 최초의 설화로, 꿈에서의 의미는 논쟁적이지만,
대부분의 해석은 아브라함의 종교(Abrahamic religions)에서 이해한 바와 같이,
하느님께서 택하신 백성들에 대한 책임과 상속이 야곱으로 확인되었다는 것에 동의한다.
야곱이라는 이름의 뜻은 어머니 리브가가 쌍둥이 형인 에서(Esau)를 낳을 때,
에서의 발꿈치를 잡고 태어나서 "발꿈치를 잡다"라는 의미로,
즉, 태어날 때부터 타인의 발꿈치를 잡고, 딴지를 건다는 부정적인 의미가 담겨 있다.
후에 야곱의 이름은 이스라엘로 개명된다(창 32:24-32).

이때 개명된 이스라엘이라는 뜻은 "하느님과 겨루어 이긴다"는 뜻으로
하느님과의 언약을 맺은 하느님의 백성, 자녀로서 하느님의 긍휼함을 입어

마치 아버지가 자녀에게 져주고 사랑하는 것처럼,

"하느님의 사랑을 입은 자"라는 의미를 가지고 있다.
하여 성경 곳곳마다, 하느님앞에 불신앙하는 이스라엘 민족에 대하여 "야곱아"
또는 "이스라엘아" 라 부르는 장면이 많이 등장한다.
