Portrait Nicholas Konstantinovich Roerich

1874년 러시아 상트 페테스부르그에서 출생한 니콜라스 콘스타노비치 로에리치
(Nicholas Konstantinovich Roerich 1874-1947)는 러시아의 화가이자 고고학자이며 
신지학, 철학자, 탐험가이자 사상가이다.  
그는 최면 및 기타 영적 관습에 관심이 있었고 그의 그림은 최면 표현을 가지고 있다고 한다
예술 문화계의 적십자와도 같은  Pax Cultura를 창설하여 

활동한 공적으로 노벨 평화상 후보에 오르기도 했다.

19세기 말 상트 페테르부르크에서 자란 레리흐는 1893년에 
상트 페테르부르크 대학과 제국예술아카데미에 동시에 등록했다. 
그는 1897년에 "예술가"라는 칭호를 받고 다음 해에는 법학 학위를 받았다. 
그는 1906년부터 1917년까지 학교를 이끌었던 제국예술장려협회에 일찍 취업했다. 
그룹과의 초기 긴장에도 불구하고 그는 

세르게이 디아길레프의 " 예술의 세계 " 사회의 일원이 되었다. 

예술적으로 레리흐는 고고학에 대한 평생의 관심과 양립할 수 있는 주제인 

러시아 고대의 가장 재능 있는 화가로 알려지게 되었다. 
그는 또한 무대 디자이너로 성공하여 큰 명성을 얻었다. 
그의 가장 잘 알려진 디자인은 보로딘의 이고르왕자 (1909 년 이후 제작), 
의상과 세트로 이고르스트라빈스키가 작곡한 봄의 의식을 위한 것이다.

건축에도 흥미를 보여 러시아를 돌아다니며 그린 요새, 수도원, 
교회나 기타 기념물들도 갈채를 받았으며, 건축물 보호 노력과 맞물려 
수십 년간 그의 지속적인 관심의 대상이 되었다.

어릴 때 부터 음악과 그림에 비상한 재질을 보였고 

음악가 Musorgsky의 조카 Helena와 결혼했다.  
또한 러시아와 우크라이나의 종교예술 영역에서도 활동을 보였다. 
그의 아내의 영향으로 동방종교에 대한 관심으로 확장되어 

점차 신비주의로 경도되었다. 
제1차 세계대전과 러시아 혁명을 거치면서 
다른 러시아 지식인들과 마찬가지로 묵시록에 빠져 들기도 했다.

혁명 이후 핀란드로 가족 전체가 이민 갔다가, 영국으로 옮겨 갔다. 
이후 작품 전시차 미국에 건너가 지인들의 도움으로 3년 정도 체류하면서 
전시 이외에도 오페라 무대디자인을 맡기도 하였다. 
뉴욕 정착 기간 동안에 예술가와 시민단체를 연결시키는 조직과 요가 협회 등을 

만들어 운영하였으며, 나중에 “니콜라스 로에리치 박물관”의 모태가 되었다. 
뉴욕을 떠나 펀잡, 카슈미르, 라다크, 카라코람 산맥 등 

아시아 지역으로 여행을 다니다, 인도 지역에 머물러 활동하였다.
​
러시아 및 아시아 지역의 역사화, 전투화, 종교화, 풍경화 등을 
일련의 시리즈 형태로 다수 그렸다. 
히말라야 연작을 비롯해, 동방의 기치, 성소, 이콘화, 아슈람, 메이트레야, 
티벳 성채, 쿨루, 칸, 라하울, 바다 등 다수의 연작 시리즈가 있다. 
화풍으로는 비잔틴화, 사실주의, 상징주의, 아르누보 등의 다양한 형식을 취하였다. 
종교적 색채를 지우고, 풍경화 위주로 본다면 화려한 색감과 구도가 
우리가 흔히 접할 수 있는 일상의 틀에서 벗어나 있어, 
그 환상적인 형태와 제재가 특이한 이국적 매력으로 다가온다.

19세기에서 20세기로 급변해 가는 세계적 상황에서 사라져가는 

문화의 아름다움과 인류의 영적인 전통을 보존할려고 노력했다. 
그는 북인도 Manali에 있는 Kulu계곡 설산이 바라보이는 암자에서 말년을 보내다 영면하였다.

니콜라스 로에리치는 티벳과 히말라야 인디아 등지의 아시아의 풍속과 문화, 
풍광에 심취하여 그곳에서 긴 기간 머무르며 글과 풍경을 남겼다. 
예수에 대한 불교 고대 필사본을 발견, 예수가 알려지지 않은 생애에 
동방에서 불교수행을 했다는 것을 밝히기도 했다. 
밀라 레파, 석가모니, 예수, 그밖의 위대한 성자들의 수행 모습을 즐겨 그렸다. 

로에리치는 히말라야 연작을 통해 색채와 선이 만들어내는 아름다운 선율,
인간이 쉽게 정복할 수 없는 히말라야의 신비를 다채로운 색채로 탄생시킨다.
미국의 소설가 하워드 러브크래프트(Howard Phillips Lovecraft)는 니콜라스 로에리치의 작품에 
큰 감명을 받아 그의 대표 소설 광기의 산맥(At the Mountains of Madness)에서 수차례 언급한다. 

거대한 산맥 너머 미지의 신비에 대한 경이로움을 화폭으로 전달하는 인물이라는 

평가를 내리기도 했는데, 특히 로에리치의 티벳과 히말라야 풍경 연작에서 받은 영감은 
광기의 산맥에 대한 이미지를 형성하는 데 큰 영향을 미쳤다.

그 아득한 능선 너머 미지의 무엇이 도사리고 있는 것만 같은 오싹한 신비로움. 
러브크래프트의 소설 속에는 많은 화가들이 언급되었다.  
그 중에서도 거대한 자연을 환상적 색채로 적셔놓은 화가 

니콜라스 로에리치의 그림에 관한 언급들을 모아본다. 

Himalayas. 1933
"항해의 마지막 여정은 여러가지 공상을 일으킬 만큼 생생하고도 짜릿했다. 
신비를 간직한 거대한 봉우리들이 북쪽에 낮에 걸린 정오의 태양을 배경으로 장관을 이루더니, 
자정이 되어도 여전히 남쪽 수평선 위로 낮게 드리워진 태양이 새하얀 눈과 푸르스름한 얼음, 
깊은  계곡과 능선에 드문드문 검게 드러난 화강암 위로 아스라한 붉은 빛을 뿜었다.

​황량한 산맥 정상에는 간혹 혹독한 남극의 바람이 휘몰아 쳤다. 
요란한 바람소리는 때론 거칠면서도 음역이 대단히 넓은 신비의 피리소리를 연상시겼는데, 
인간의 잠재의식을 일깨우는 듯한 섬뜩한 화음을 들으며 
나는 왠지 마음이 불안해져 막연한 공포에 떨기도 했다. 
눈앞에 펼쳐진 광경은 언젠가 본 니콜라스 로에리치의 그림을 연상시켰다. 
아시아를 기이하게 표현한 그 그림은 바라보기만 해도 마음이 불안해졌었다.

광인으로 불리는 압둘 알하즈레드의 '네크로노미콘' 에 
악마의 전설로 가득한 것으로 묘사된 렝 고원의 소름끼치는 장면도 떠올랐다. 
나는 공연히 대학 도서관에서 그 끔찍한 책을 들여다보았다고 후회하기도 했다."

Star of the Morning. 1932
"가장 높은 산의 능선에는 이상한 형태가 보임. 
양쪽 끝면을 정확하게 수직으로 깎은 거대한 벽돌 모양의 돌들이 

낮은 성벽처럼 산을 감싸고 있다. 
마치 로에리치의 그림에서 깎아지른 산의 능선에 매달린 

아시아의 옛 성곽 유적같은 모습이라, 
멀리서도 대단히 인상적이다. 좀 더 가까이 접근 중. 
캐롤 생각은  더 작은 벽돌들을 수직으로 쌓아올린 것 같다는데 

어쩌면 날씨 탓으로 그렇게 보이는지도 모르겠다.

수백 만 년 동안 폭풍과 기후에 노출된 때문인 듯, 모서리는 대부분 부서져 둥글게 깎여 있음. 
성벽을 이루고 있는 부분 암석들은 특히 윗부분은 능선 자체의 지층보다 색이 흐려보인다. 
크리스탈 계통의 성분으로 판단된다. 가까이 비행한 결과 수많은 동굴 입구들이 드러났다. 
사각형이거나 반원형의 동굴 입구는 이상할 정도로 규칙적이다."

Tibetan Stronghold (Basgo). 1932
"산맥 주봉들이 이상한 규칙성을 띠고 있다는 사실을 우리에게 일깨워준 것은 댄포스였다. 
레이크 교수가 전문에서 언급했던 대로 완벽한 입방체 모양이 

규칙적으로 산 정상을 둘러싸고 있었다. 
아시아의 어느 산 정상에 있다는 고대사원의 폐허를 음산하게 그린 
로에리치의 그림과 비교했던 그의 설명은 정확한 표현이었다. 
지상의 세계와는 왠지 어울릴 것 같지 않은 신비로운 산맥의 모양이 
정말로 자꾸만 로에리치의 그림을 연상시켰다. 
10월에 처음 빅토리아 랜드를 보았을 때 느꼈던 바로 그 느낌을, 

나는 지금 또 다시 생생하게 느끼고 있었다."

"그러나 우리는 이미 거대한 별 모양의 폐허를 지나쳐 비행기에 도착해 있었고, 
공포의 대상도 우리 앞에 놓인 거대한 산맥을 어떻게 넘어갈 것인가의 문제로 바뀌었다. 
구릉 지대에서 바라본 검은 산등성이는 동쪽 하늘을 배경으로 험악하게만 보였고 
또 한번 니콜라스 로에리치의 그림을 연상시켰다.

​형체없이 흐물거리는 소름끼치는 존재들이 어쩌면 지독한 악취를 내뿜으며 

산맥 지하로 뚫린 수많은 동굴을 통해 제일 꼭대기의 뾰족탑까지 

올라왔을지도 모른다는 생각이 들자 악마의 피리소리를 닮은 바람소리가 휘몰아치는 

산 정상의 동굴들을 어떻게 지나가야 할지 몸서리가 쳐졌다. 
설상가상으로 산 정상에서 심상치 않은 안개가 피어오르는 것이 보였다. 
레이크 교수는 그것을 화산활동으로 오인했었지만 어쩌면 우리가 탈출해온 
불길한 어둠의 심연에서 뿜어나온 수증기일지도 모른다는 생각이 들었다."

"메리트는 신비주의 애호가들과 많이 알고 지낸다네, 
그리고 러시아 화가 니콜라스 로에리치의 절친한 친구이기도 하지, 
그 화가의 이 세상 것 같지 않은 티벳의 풍경화에 나는 오래도록 감명을 받아왔다네."

​"니콜라스 로에리치는 초현실주의자들보다 훨씬 더 탁월하다네. 
리버사이드 드라이브와 103번가에 있는 그의 작품과 접하는 순간은 
내게는 페스트 지대 속의 성소에 들어간 것과도 같아. 
그가 붓질한 원근과 풍광 속에는 내게 있어 다른 차원과 이질적 존재 양식을 

암시해주는 뭔가가-또는 최소한 그런 세계로 이어지는 입구가- 들어 있네. 
고적한 고원 속에 환상적으로 조각된 거석들, 

불길하면서도 어딘가 감각적인 느낌의 깔죽깔죽한 산마루 능선 
- 특히 그 중에서도 가리워진 바늘 산정 위로 테를 두르고서 
험준한 사면에 들러붙어 있는 그 기묘한 사각형 건물들이라니!"
